モルガン・スタンレーの社員だけは、ヘルメットをかぶって、猛烈な勢いで階段を駆け抜けて降りて千人ほどが助かっているが、それはなぜなのか。
ベトナム戦争帰りのリック・レスコラという頑固一徹の軍人上がりの警備員がいて、社員を「ちんたらするな！」と怒鳴りつけながら避難させていたからだ。
リック・レスコラは崩壊するビルから逃げず、最期まで人々を助けようとして残ったので犠牲者のひとりとなった。
しかし、人々が何が起きているのか自覚していない時に、兵士独特の嗅覚で「重大な危機が訪れた」ことを悟っており、死の覚悟をして、妻に最後の別れの言葉を電話で言っていた。分かっていたのだ。
リック・レスコラは1993年の貿易センタービル爆破事件でも、従業員を救済していた。軍人は、まったく正常性バイアスのワナにはまることはない。戦場で正常性バイアスのワナにかかると死ぬからだ。
